"It’s hard to tell with these Internet startups if they’re really interested in building companies or if they’re just interested in the money. I can tell you, though: If they don’t really want to build a company, they won’t luck into it. That’s because it’s so hard that if you don’t have a passion, you’ll give up."

Dynamics of Disempowerment and De-authorisation

This is the first blog post in a (sort of) leadership series. Most of the stuff comes from the USB MBA leadership module and my own personnel experience. Yes I know I’m only 27, but we all have some words of wisdom to give. I for one believe strong leadership has absolutely nothing to do with age.

So what does dis-empowerment and de-authorisation mean. Well essentially the same thing. We as human beings have a tendency to empower others or dis-empower ourselves. 99.9% of Men subconsciously automatically will always empower there fathers. That’s why it will always feel like your dad or any father figure has this power of authority over you. It’s all about the power and ranking of authority over and under you. Malcolm Gladwell calls it the power distance index in his book Outliers.

You can atriibute this power to your boss, a leadership figure, friends or anyone. Think about it => that friend that you look up to, the leaders in the group most of the time, you listen to him/her, look up to him, actually you talk up to him.

What we sometimes mistakenly do is dis-empower ourselves in-front of a alpha male or bully at work or whatever group setting of your choosing. Now suddenly your not all confident in-front of him/her. Your afraid of him, a fear of man if you will.

This comes at our own emotional expense as it leads to us under performing, afraid to stand up, not being ourselves etc. i.o.w don’t give the wrong people power over you it impacts our behavior & leadership towards ourselves and others.

So be attentive on who you give rank and power over you. It will change your life. It surely changed mine.

Cheers

For the holiday.

It’s almost time to go lie on the beach or ski on the slopes (depending on which hemisphere you are). All I ask is that you do the following for me during this wonderful time of rest, friends, fun and most importantly family:

Use this time to expand your mind, change your views on subjects, broaden your horizons, expand your vision, because for 320 odd days a year most of you go to the same building and do the same thing every day creating what I call the pattern - life - distortion. It’s like becoming a horse with one of those eye patches on. You see the same thing everyday and begin to think this is all there is without thinking it. Patterns, habits and comfort zones are dangerous things.

So please, go read a book, go to a far away place and don’t take your phone or iPad along.

Refresh.

Starting again.

For the last year I’ve been diving into the startup world.

I read the books, read the blogs, followed the VC’s, watched the videos, learned to code to an extent, met with local startupreteurs and looked desperately hard for co-founders.

What can I show so far… nothing.

I have two startup shells on Angellist and that’s it.

It’s so frustrating having these awesome ideas, but not being able to execute them => because I don’t have a technical co-founder.

I so desperately want to get in I would give half my liver. This is what I want => I was born to do this. Can anyone hear my call? :)

Time will tell and I can’t wait for that moment when the ball really gets rolling, because ladies and gentleman. Then you won’t be able to stop me.

Cheers.
